TOEFL iBT was overhauled by ETS in January 2026. Total test time dropped to ~90 minutes, the section order became Reading → Listening → Writing → Speaking, and a six-band scale (1.0–6.0 in 0.5 steps) replaced the legacy 0–30-per-section scale as the primary report — though score reports continue to show the 0–120 total through at least 2028 to ease university admissions transitions. The 2026 redesign also introduced new task families: Complete the Words and Read in Daily Life on Reading; Listen and Choose a Response on Listening; Build a Sentence and Email Writing on Writing; Listen and Repeat on Speaking. Long-form academic content (passage reading, lecture listening, academic discussion writing, opinion speaking) still anchors the test.
