IELTS Academic is jointly owned by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English. Total test time is 2h45m. The test delivers four sections in fixed order: 30-minute Listening (40 questions, 4 parts, audio played once), 60-minute Reading (40 questions, 3 academic passages totalling 2,150-2,750 words), 60-minute Writing (Task 1: 150-word data/process/map description; Task 2: 250-word essay), and 11-14 minute Speaking with a certified examiner (Part 1 interview, Part 2 long turn from a cue card with 1 min preparation, Part 3 analytical discussion). Each section is scored 0-9 in 0.5-band increments; the overall band is the mean of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half. Writing Task 2 is weighted twice as heavily as Task 1 within the Writing band.
